Sweethearts and Loving Care – Moomin Arabia’s new Classics celebrate love in its various forms

Rolling out on 21 January, Moomin Arabia’s two novelty designs in the Classics collection, Sweethearts and Loving Care, depict the various ways love manifests itself. The novelties are part of celebrating the 30th anniversary of the all-time popular Love mug, which sets the theme for the entire year of 2026. In addition to a ceramic mug, bowl, and plate, the new Classics include plenty of textiles and fun accessories & decorative items.

The many sides of love in the Moomin stories

Love is a very common and important theme in Tove Jansson’s Moomin stories, and the author depicted it in words and illustrations in its various forms. During the Love 30 anniversary, Moomin Arabia explores the various aspects of love, which resonate with Tove Jansson’s attitude and the Moomin values she based them on.

The new Sweethearts items are about forgiveness, as even when the Moomins face challenges, strength is always found in each other. Love, trust, and compassion can overcome anything.

In the new Loving Care items, love is shown through the characters’ kindness, reminding us that simple caring, selfless acts can create a more connected world.

Moomintroll and Snorkmaiden, the Sweethearts

The Sweethearts’ items tell a story where Moomintroll discovers what he believes to be a ship’s log filled with the fantasies of a mermaid. However, it turns out to be Snorkmaiden’s diary, and when she finds out, a flurry of emotions ensues. The confusion and quibble end in reconciliation and hugs –all illustrated in scenes that are at the same time amusing and endearing, just as the two sweethearts’ relationship.

The three-scene illustration is inspired by the comics Moomin Under Sail (1959), The Conscientious Moomins (1958), and Snorkmaiden Goes Rococo (1958) created by Tove Jansson and her brother Lars Jansson.

The main colours are pastel lilac and pink and the illustration with Moomintroll, Snorkmaiden, flowers, the sun, and a tree repeats throughout the different Sweetheart items. The range includes the familiar ceramic Classics trio—a 0.3-litre mug, bowl, and plate—as well as a coffee spoon and plenty of textiles and smaller accessories for kitchen, dining table, bedroom, and bathroom.

Only Loving Care in the Moomin Family

Inspired by Tove Jansson’s comics Moomin’s Desert Island (1955) and Moomin falls in Love (1956), a heartwarming adventure is depicted on the Loving Care items. A picnic turns into a daring rescue as the Moomins save shipwrecked pirates. The fearsome duo becomes charmed by Moominmamma’s gentle nature, and in the illustration, we see them helping her tend to her garden. While the Moomins and pirates would indeed have entirely different intentions in life, the Moomins’ kindness is an act of love that represents a hope for a better world, and can create new relationships.

The sage green and pale pink illustration also shows Moomintroll hugging a tree and Snorkmaiden petting a cat, and repeats on the different Loving Care items. In addition to a mug, bowl , and plate, the items include a coffee spoon, napkins, and a mini mug.
