The all-time favorite Moomin Arabia Love mug celebrates its 30th anniversary

Hearts will be flying as Moomin Arabia’s pink Love mug and its beloved illustration depicting Moomintroll and Snorkmaiden’s deep relationship reach a milestone age in 2026. Moomin Arabia dedicates the 30th anniversary year to love with a vast collection of Love items, featuring limited-edition pieces, including the iconic Love mug with exclusive details. The collection will be available from January 27, 2026.

30 years since the first Love mug

Turning 30 years next year, Moomin Arabia’s Love mug has been in production for the longest time of all Moomin mugs, since 1996. With its adorned illustration, the 0.3-litre mug is by far the most popular across all markets.

The 30th anniversary of the beloved mug sets a theme for the entire year.

“With Moomintroll’s and Snorkmaiden’s adorable example, we want to pay tribute to this grand message and celebrate love in all forms, whether in romance, deep friendship, or any other significant relationships in people’s lives. It’s quite often that we hear from fans, that the Love mug has, in fact, been the first mug they’ve gotten as a gift, and that has been the start of collecting the Moomin mugs. So, we can definitely say that this mug in particular plays a special role for many collectors as well. Whatever comes, true love lasts!” says Mirka Paasikangas, Moomin Arabia’s global PR and Communications manager.

Love in three scenes

The story of the Love illustration began when Moomin Arabia’s long-time former illustrator partner Tove Slotte, drew Moomintroll and Snorkmaiden in three scenes for a new 0.3-litre mug in 1996.

Slotte combined the illustrations from Tove Jansson’s various Moomin comic stories to show their affectionate relationship as playmates and sweethearts. Even though the two sometimes have crushes on others, their adventures always have a happy ending. The humming and hawing nature of their relationship can only mean one thing: true love!

The mug’s illustration is perhaps best recognised by the hug shared by Moomintroll and Snorkmaiden on the front of the mug. In the story Moomin and the Martians (1957), Moomintroll, curious by nature, ends up messing around with the Martians’ malfunctioning machine that turns him and Moominmamma small. After a fast-paced adventure, one of the Martian parents helps reverse the shrunk effect. With relief, Snorkmaiden hugs Moomintroll, now back to normal. The blazing sun in the background is picked from the comic Moomin Valley Turns Jungle (1956).

comic strip — Moomin Builds a House (1956)

The scene with Moomintroll and Snorkmaiden painting flowers is from the story Moomin Builds a House (1956) and depicts a scene that follows a disagreement. The two end up compromising on their preferences for the colour of the house, so the red and blue become lilac. The third scene of the sweethearts’ adorable encounter on a path is from the story Snorkmaiden Goes Rococo (1958).

A limited-edition Love collection with anniversary details just in time for Valentine’s

The highlight of the collection will be the special anniversary edition of the 0.3-litre Love mug. The exclusive crown jewel of the collection comes in a limited amount. The exclusive mug is only available as long as the stock lasts. In addition to the exclusive edition, there’s also the anniversary edition of the Love mug that comes in a gift box, and includes the anniversary back stamp.

The inside of the mug features an adorable pair of Moomins standing snout to snout with pink hearts flying above them. Next to the illustration, there’s a confession of love, written in a cute handwriting style. The mug features a confession of love, which is a quote from the comic “Moomin Falls in Love” (1956).

“The text detail suggests a lovely way to delight a loved one on Valentine’s Day or on any other of the numerous occasions of celebrating love and affection throughout the year”, says Paasikangas. “Serve them a coffee in bed, and let them find the message as they sip away.”

There is also an anniversary stamp on the bottom of the mug and the other Love dining ceramics, all available during the anniversary year 2026 only.

The full collection will include a vast array of items from ceramics and glassware to textiles and decorative pieces for the kitchen, dining room and living room, repeating the different Moomintroll and Snorkmaiden scenes of the illustration of the iconic Love mug.

”The collection features many totally new Love items, and I’m sure every Moomin fan will find their favourites. We are also expecting to raise collectors’ interest, as many of the anniversary pieces are available for a limited time only”, says Paasikangas.

During the anniversary year, the iconic love theme will be reflected in other collections too, such as the soon-to-be-launched new Classics.

The entire limited-edition Love 30th anniversary collection will be available globally from 27 January 2026 through sales channels widely.

Only the exclusive anniversary mug with details and the new minifigurine are available through select sales channels, including the Moomin Arabia online store moominarabia.com, Moomin Arabia Stores, Moomin Shops, the moomin.com online store, and at selected retailers.

The Love ceramics with the anniversary bottom stamp and Love glassware will only be available until the end of 2026 or while stocks last.
