Moomin Arabia

Background

Tove Jansson herself painted the first Moomin mugs at the Finnish ceramics factory Arabia in the 1950s. The second coming of Moomin Arabia products began in the 1990s. The lineup then included four figurines: Moomintroll, Snorkmaiden, Moominpappa and Moominmamma. Sought-after features like the Arabia bottom stamp were already introduced then. Soon after, in 1992, Too-Ticky and Little My were added to the collection.

The Moomin mug was relaunched by dressing up the classic Teema mug, designed by Kaj Frank, in Moomin illustrations. Today, Moomin Arabia is a standalone brand of Fiskars Group and one of the biggest Moomin licensees ever.

The Collaboration

In the 1990s, with the introduction of Moomin mugs, the popularity of the Moomin Arabia collection exploded. Around the same time, Arabia’s designer, Tove Slotte, started working with the Moomin collection.

The Moomin mugs are highly desired collectables today – along with jars, pitchers, bowls, plates, and other items. Designing a character dish is a long process that takes nearly two years. It’s based on the feedback from consumers, as well as the modern appeal of art, such as future trends in colours.

“Tove Jansson’s legacy for Finnish art and storytelling is multi-layered, and Moomin stories, illustrations and philosophy are some of Jansson’s most widespread and well-known works. They have an impact over generations and find new audiences over and over again.

We are happy and proud that Arabia’s Moomin tableware and items can bring a piece of this to people’s everyday lives”

The Moomin Arabia product line has grown beyond porcelain tableware to include textiles, glassware, and home accessories. Among these, the porcelain mugs are the most popular products. The mugs are also highly sought after by collectors as one rare mug was sold for over 23,000 EUR at an auction house.
