Background

Stig Lindberg was a man of many skills – imaginative and surreal in his expression. He would place flowers where none are to be found and fish where there are no fish. He was also innovative in the way he worked with materials and colors. Stig Lindberg wanted to create a more beautiful Sweden available to everyone, he was extremely productive during his active years and left a real treasure of patterns behind.

This inspired the interior brand Layered, which decided to create an exclusive collection of rugs in some of Lindberg’s most iconic patterns.

Layered’s Stig Lindberg line was introduced in 2022

The Collaboration

Layered first decided to utilize the popular patterns Berså and Trellis. The patterns were each used on rugs in two colorways. The rugs in the Stig Lindberg x Layered collection combine 100% New Zealand wool in a hand-knotted technique. The flat weave generates a structured baseline of the rug, accompanied by a tufted shaggy detail in the formation of hand-spun yarn. The distinction of the high/low pile creates a dynamic finish that complements Stig’s signature designs.

Layered also discovered that Stig Lindberg’s wife, Gunnel, once designed and weaved a rug that was never taken into production. As a tribute to her, and as a complementary colourway to the more intense rugs, the Gunnel rug also made it into the collection.

Results

The initial drop of the Stig Lindberg x Layered collection sold out within days, prompting Layered to extend the collection and begin production on more rugs. Layered expressed their gratitude for the overwhelming response to the launch. In light of this success, a second collection featuring new designs was released in November 2022. The Stig Lindberg x Layered collaboration has now become a long-lasting collection.
