Flåklypa by Kjell Aukrust

A universe that continues to inspire.

Kjell Aukrust (1920-2002) is one of Norway’s most beloved authors and foremost illustrators. His first stories about the residents in Flåklypa came out in 1946. In Aukrust’s stories the cartoons had a significance far beyond illustrating the text. Drawings and text, humor and seriousness, adventurous inventions and long-lasting moods went hand in hand in everything he created – from the wild ones of Flåklypa to the quiet wonders of Ludvig.

Kjell Aukrust

Kjell Aukrust started his career as an illustrator working for newspaper and magazines and debuted in 1958 as an author. He has written over 30 books, many of which contain beautiful illustrations of his two most known characters Solan and Ludvig.

Drawing and text, humor and seriousness, went hand in hand in everything Kjell Aukrust did – from the wild and crazy characteristics in the fictional newspaper “Flåklypa Tidende” to the quiet wonder of one of his most famous characters, Ludvig.

The art of Aukrust has been used in both films, theater and ballet. His drawings have been bought by the National Gallery (Nasjonalgalleriet) and his books are continues to be renewed for publishing.

He was a multi-artist who has influenced Norwegian culture and society with his subtle quotes and character descriptions from Flåklypa and fantastic drawings of rural life in Alvdal.

Kjell Aukrust continued to write books, draw, and paint throughout his whole life.

“All the characters that Kjell created are so carefully described, both in his drawings and in his stories about them.”
