Anna Soudakova shortlisted for the Eeva Joenpelto Prize 2024

Our warmest congratulations to author Anna Soudakova, one of the seven Eeva Joenpelto Prize 2024 nominees.

One of the highlights this week was Anna Soudakova’s nomination for the Eeva Joenpelto Prize 2024 with her novel Protect My Shadow (Varjele varjoani, Atena 2022).

The jury states:

”Anna Soudakova’s novel Protect My Shadow vividly and believably describes a way of life that is generally less familiar to Finns, i.e. the everyday life of Ingrian-Finns returnees, both in post-war Leningrad and later in the Finnish suburb of Turku, Varissuo. Soudakova particularly skilfully and poignantly captures the feelings of otherness and outsideness experienced by uprooted people struggling in the cross wave of pressures to preserve and fade away their identity.”

The Eeva Joenpelto Prize is a national recognition given by the city of Lohja. From 2024, it will be awarded biannually to a work written in domestic languages. The prize is worth 10,000 euros. The winner will be announced on 8 June.
