The Space Between Stars

By Aino Louhi

”For a long time, I think this is a story about us. Or about you. Except this is a story about me. And it will only continue for years, years later.”

A woman picks up the pieces of her life in a post-divorce universe. What does she desire when she desires nothing?

The Space Between Stars, Louhi’s second fictional graphic novel, is a combination of a graphic novel and a picture book for adults. The title was shortlisted for The Torch-Bearer Literary Export Prize in 2022.

Reviews

“This young woman’s coming-of-age story is a wonderful and controlled work, down to the last stroke. The minimalist cover fascinates and arouses curiosity, and the elegant gold foil of the handwritten book title is stylishly repeated in the stars on the front and back covers. Outer space reappears between episodes, moving the story forward. The understated, sparse handwritten typography at the bottom of the page works well with the slow, contemplative story, and the tempera illustrations contribute a slow but profound atmosphere.”

The Most Beautiful Books Jury

“Louhi's use of line is calm and gentle, intimate.(…)The beautifully constructed graphic novel secures Aino Louhi's position at the forefront of contemporary Finnish graphic novelists.”
