The first out of four vehicle-themed books that Nina Pirhonen will illustrate for MacMillan is finally out! Nina Pirhonen’s illustrations together with text by Donna David create this wonderfully colorful children’s picture book that takes the reader on a train-filled adventure.
With a super-shiny foil cover and fun read-aloud text, Trains Trains Trains! is just the ticket for any transport-obsessed toddler. The book has been created to especially develop and encourage pre-reading skills and expand language and vocabulary. Nina Pirhonen’s wonderful illustrations fills the books pages with trains and the book even features an exciting surprise fold-out-race at the end.
“In creating the series of vehicle books, I wanted to make them relatable to children of all ethnic or gender backgrounds. It’s important to me to create books that support children’s freedom to express themselves and to give them an open view of the world.
I made a very colourful, detailed and modern illustration using clear shapes of colour combined with hand-drawn lines of charcoal and ink. My background as a fashion and textile designer shows in the use of patterns in my illustrations. I see illustrations as a set of colour and shapes through which you tell stories.”
“Collaboration with a major international publisher is such an important experience to me. Working with the creative team of PAN Macmillan has been a dream. Very demanding yet fun! They have a clear vision of the series and yet give me plenty of artistic freedom to create the illustrations.
This is also the very first time I have illustrated another author’s text. It has been such a great experience to work with Donna David’s wonderful rhythmic text and to turn that into illustrations.”
