Marsh Memories by Jenni Räinä nominated for the 2023 Botnia Prize

We are absolutely delighted to share the news that Jenni Räinä’s novel Marsh Memories (Suo muistaa, 2022) is one of the eight nominees for the 2023 Botnia Prize.

Marsh Memories (Suo muistaa) is the author’s debut fiction novel in which she embeds the themes of the climate crisis and protection of the environment into the stories of fictional characters, Juho and Hellä. Read more about the book here.

Jenni Räinä is a journalist interested in nature and the environment. Both of her non-fiction books deal with Finnish nature, especially forests and swamps. Marsh Memories (Suo muistaa) reflects the author’s knowledge of these topics. Previously, Räinä was awarded the Botnia Prize for her book Reunalla.

Part of the jury’s motivation reads:

Marsh Memories (Suo muistaa) is a timely work as it portrays idealism and common social issues. The language of the novel is beautiful, and the narrator does not hesitate when leading the main characters towards the inevitable end. The dramatic haymaking scene has the elements of a classic – within a few pages, Räinä manages to take the story to new heights and demonstrates how human beings can try to defy the forces of nature.

Botnia Prize is a prestigious literary award established by the Oulu Writers Association and given to the best book of the year written by an author from North Ostrobothnia. The award sum is EUR 15,000. The winner will be announced in October. You can read the full list of nominees here.

Warmest congratulations to our author Jenni Räinä for this recognition!
