“Treasures from Moominvalley” is the definitive book on collectible Moomin products

Anders Landén’s new book “Treasures from Moominvalley – a Collector’s Guide to Tove Jansson’s Moomins,” was released on 23 May. This definitive guide is a treasure trove for Moomin enthusiasts, containing detailed information about Moomin products from the 1950s onwards. The richly illustrated volume, spanning over 500 pages, includes more than 1,200 items such as rare book covers and obscure collectibles like ceramic money boxes.

Anders Landén, a journalist with a strong interest in collectibles, dedicated over two years to researching and writing this book. In an interview with moomin.com he tells about the process of extensive work involved sifting through archives, photographing items, and exploring auctions. One of the significant challenges he faced was documenting all the different book covers of Moomin editions from around the world, a task that took him many months. The result is a comprehensive compilation of over 400 first-edition covers, many of which have not been previously assembled in one place.

“Treasures from Moominvalley – a Collector’s Guide to Tove Jansson’s Moomins” consists of nine chapters and is available in Swedish and English. It delves into the history of Moomin products, revealing fascinating details about the production and design of various items. For example, it discusses the ceramic figurines made by Leo Tykkyläinen and the involvement of Tove Jansson’s mother, Signe Hammarsten Jansson, in creating models for these figurines.

Landén’s deep admiration for Tove Jansson and her work is evident throughout. He highlights her meticulous nature and business savvy, which were crucial in maintaining the integrity and popularity of the Moomins. The book also provides personal anecdotes from Landén, such as his early exposure to Moomin products while working at a second-hand shop and his children’s tradition of gifting him Moomin mugs.

He shares his delight in acquiring various Moomin items during his research, including rare editions and unique collectibles. It also took a lof effort to track down elusive items, such as the Brazilian editions of Moomin books, which took over a year and a half to locate and document.

The book also sheds light on the broader cultural impact of Moomin merchandise, from Arabia’s popular Moomin mugs to various international editions and collectibles.
