Marika Maijala is Illustrator of the Year 2024

The Finnish Illustration Association has chosen Marika Maijala as the Illustrator of the Year 2024. This is the sixth time the Finnish Illustration Association has presented the greatest recognition prize in the illustration industry. 

According to the jury, Marika Maijala’s distinctive, unique visual language and relaxed line continues to delight again and again. Her work has charmed children’s book lovers around the world. 

The Illustrator of the Year Award, Finland’s most significant prize in the illustration industry worth € 10,000, is presented annually to an illustrator or group of illustrators who have contributed significantly to the field. The award is funded by royalties collected by Kopiosto. 

Maijala is a celebrated creator and has previously been awarded the Rudolf Koivu Prize (2008 and 2018), the State Prize for Illustration (2020) and the Golden Peak of Graphia (2023). Her award exhibition will be held at the Ahjo Gallery in Espoo’s Cultural Centre later this year in November-December.

She has illustrated various picture books and written three of her own including The Magic Flower (Taikurin kukka) which was among the Most Beautiful Books of Finland (2023), 100 Outstanding Picture Books (2023) and one of the winners of the 58th Illustrators Exhibition. Maijala’s books are published by Etana Edition.
